The new Mandoon Estate Winery and Homestead Brewery is now open at Caversham in the Swan Valley.
‘Smart Homes for Living’ was lucky enough to visit the gorgeous new Mandoon Estate & Homestead Brewery on a sunny September Saturday afternoon.
Mandoon was buzzing with the sounds of live music, birds chirping; the area was buzzing with young families and groups enjoying the great food, excellent beer and fine wine of the newly developed Estate.
While Mandoon Estate has been open for business in the Swan Valley for some time, until recently, the property was essentially a few sheds, a wine operation, and a small cellar door.
After several years of development, Australian-Croatian owner of Mandoon Estate, Mr Allan Erceg, has executed an incredible vision into reality.
Guests to Mandoon and Homestead Brewery will witness a large function center, a lavish fine-dining restaurant, a huge indoor bar, outdoor pagoda area, including big screen TVs and fire places, a new wine and beer tasting cellar plus the newly established Homestead Brewery operations, a popular family friendly beer garden and a gourmet deli for visitors to enjoy. Also, the old homestead at Mandoon has been restored, adding a wonderful colonial era touch.
The History of Mandoon:
Mandoon was first named after an expedition by Captain James Stirling in 1827. Mandoon means “place of many trees,” derived from the language of the Noongar people, the Indigenous Australian people of the area.
The first vineyards at Mandoon were established in 1840 by John Septimus Roe, the Swan River Colony’s Surveyor General, making Mandoon home to the oldest vineyards in WA.
Today, Allan Erceg has invested millions to develop the Estate into one of the Swan Valley’s premier new attractions. There are now plans for concerts and events for up to 15,000 people. It’s likely operations will expand as the Mandoon and Homestead brands grow.

Mandoon Estate Underground Tasting Cellar:
The Mandoon cellar door is open 10am to 5pm daily. The new facilities include an above ground shop front, bar and the underground cellar for tasting.

Mandoon Estate and Homestead Brewery Weddings:
The Mandoon Estate and Homestead Brewery Grounds are absolutely ideal for Weddings.
The Estate grounds overlook the Swan River, the river moves past the estate. You can see down to the Swan from the top of a gulley at Mandoon. From here, visitors can look across and uphill to some of the vineyards, these stretch for about 1.5 kilometers and the sun sets into the distance.
The Estate, as its name says, is surrounded by lots of trees, lush grass and old heritage buildings mixed with new facilities, all fitting perfectly into the heritage culture of the area.

The Homestead Brewery Beer:
The new Homestead Brewery is a big investment for owner Mr Ergec.
Responsibility for Homestead Brewery rests with Master Brewer Ron Feruglio, who has made the move to Caversham after his successful period brewing beers in Victoria. We love what Ron has to say about Mandoon and Homestead Brewery.
Ron recently told Crafty Pint: “Everything is about quality – no compromises. It’s not about volume sales. The wine is premium, the food is premium and the beer will be premium.”
One of the great unique selling points of Homestead Brewery is Feruglio’s use of Mandoon’s old wine barrels in the brewing process, “The winemaker [Ryan Sudano] only uses barrels once so I have an endless supply of wine barrels. We already have a barrel ageing and sours program in place. They’re going to build me my own cellar so I can keep the sours away from everybody.”
For now, The Homestead beers are only avaliable on tap on location. So if you want to try, there’s only one way, a trip to Caversham (about 25 minutes out of the Perth CBD). Here’s our review of the five beers currently on tap.
‘Black Swan’ – Black IPA
One of the best dark beers we’ve ever had, the ‘Black Swan’ was popular with the lads and one of the smoothest and most delightful after-tastes you’ll ever have in a moderately dark IPA.
‘The Kaisers Choice’- Hefeweizen or ‘Wheat Beer’
A very good wheat beer, given the popularity of wheat beers from the Swan Valley, more established breweries like Feral Brewery down the road will be given a run for it’s money.
‘Thunderbird’ – American Pale Ale
This Pale Ale was very enjoyable indeed. Perfect for the warmer weather, the Pale Ale had a very unique taste with a strong flavors.
‘No1 Premier’ – Belgian Pale Ale
The No1 Premier was the better of the Pale’s, an easy, cold beer that went down far too easily.
‘Homestead’ – Pilsner
You’ll have to try this one when you get to Homestead Brewery, after four pints, we didn’t make it this far.
Homestead Brewery Food:
The Homestead Brewery includes it’s own unique delicatessen with classic contemporary Australian fair. We had the lamp, roast on a spit. Inside the deli, there was a great range of foods to choose from to share. You can also order gourmet pizza, plus lots of hot food including hot chicken wings, hot chips and much more.
